My name is Richard Cantor, I've been involved in the metal crafts my entire life.  From
working as an apprentice machinist on Long Island, a journeyman machinist and
machine builder in the garment district of NYC and then owing a metal spinning
company making fine brass lamp parts in the neighborhood that went on to become
SOHO, my life has been a journey through the ever changing landscape of American
craftsmanship and manufacturing.

Making fine custom brass lighting fixtures, historic reproduction lighting, sheet metal
lanterns, custom lighting and period lighting fixtures, I am one of the luckiest people
to work at what I love.  Creating style and beauty in metal is my passion and a
challenge that I need and welcome in my life.  Artisan Lamps and Lighting is a venue to
share the end result with the marketplace, apply unique designs where they are useful
and to collaborate on new projects and custom lighting solutions.

Given the present state of the metal crafts and traditional/historic method
manufacturing in the US, I feel Artisan Lamps and Lighting's studio is relevant in so
many ways.   My hope is that we will be able to serve those involved in
period and
historic
restoration lighting for many years to come.

The studio is also a place to give something back.  Artisan Lamps and Lighting and
our
affiliated company Cantor Designs are vehicles to pass on the skills learned over a
lifetime to the next generation. They are the future metal artisans and craftsmen, they
will carry forward the knowledge not just from books, but in their hands.
